There are many commercial housing agencies in Amsterdam, not all of them equally trustworthy. To subscribe with an agency, one normally pays a certain fee, usually between 50 and 100 euro, and is then kept informed on the available apartments. Some agencies expect you to call yourself, and the apartments are given to those who happened to be on the phone that day or week. Thus it depends on your own fanatism how fast you will have succes in finding a place. "Direkt Wonen" on the Overtoom is an agency that works like that.
    The rent at housing agency apartments is often much higher than at housing corporations. You can consider getting a lower rent once you have moved into the apartment.
